DESCRIPTION: Hilt with large faceted ears, covered with sheet silver and richly decorated with filigree work. On the outer and inner surfaces of the ears there is a single oval or polygonal bead of coral, in the decoration of the filigree work are rosettes. On the joining band is a decoration of filigree work with nine coral, round beads, and two rectangular plates decorated with niello. On the continuation of the hilt filigree decoration of beads and ribbons. On the leaf-shaped part of the blade, decoration of filigree work and rhomboidal plates with a single round coral bead on each side. The blade is of steel, single-edged, curved, with narrow fuller along the ridge. On one side of the blade a damascened decoration of tendrils, and an Arabic inscription, which in translation runs: '1212 ( AH.) // Made by Bosna Muhamed, owner Salih. // Rely upon your Creator, slave Salih.' Scabbard wooden, covered in leather, with silver upper mounting, richly decorated with filigree work. Lower part of the mounting of the scabbard probably missing. Found in Bosnia. Purchased from Vlasta Jakovlic, Zagreb. The yatagan was owned by the family of Mrs Vlasta Jakovlic. She received it as part of the estate of her mother, Paula Putic, or from her aunt, her mother's sister, Adela Dilber, née Casartelli. She was married to Austro-Hungarian officer Ivan Dilber, born around 1888 in Bugojno, who in turn received the yatagan from his father, who acquired it somewhere in Bosnia.
